FIGMENT NYC

New York at Dusk by Richard Silver on Zatista.com

If you were in New York last weekend, some of you may have been lucky enough to stumble upon FIGMENT – a free, annual celebration of participatory art and culture. The festival began on Governors Island in 2007, and has now grown and spread to events in nine cities in three countries on two continents.

In New York, during the FIGMENT NYC weekend event, over 400 artists transform Governors Island into a large-scale collaborative artwork, experienced by 25,000 participants in 2013. This year’s event featured some amazing interactive art exhibits (such as interactive sculptures and a mini golf course with clever displays designed by NYC artists leading players through the game).

FIGMENT also introduced the 2014 launch of the TreeHouse! where guests are encouraged to contribute their own artistic ‘je ne sais quoi’ to the “decor” of the treehouse – paint was supplied for visitors to doodle or even create a masterpiece on the walls.

FIGMENT’s 2014 Summer-Long Program, including the treehouse, minigolf course, and interactive sculptures will be free and open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays while the island is open through September.
