Artist Statement:
I was born in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1962 as Patty Jo Beaton which is how I sign my works. Throughout my life, I have lived several places within the United States including Colorado, Arizona, California, Illinois, North Carolina, Florida and Missouri - but the last ten years I have lived in Canada. Along the way, I enjoyed experiencing the different cultures and ways of life - southern hospitality, the diversity of city life in Chicago, and being "out west."
My first experience with painting was painting my family's old farmhouse with my Father. Later in life, I would take finished works over to him so he could view them. We would discuss the painting and suggestions he had. As far as work, I was a house painter for several years. I worked on historical houses, residential homes and even a couple of churches. All the work was done by hand. I had one very good brush which I was expected to keep clean and use every day. I would paint from 8 to 5 like a regular work day.
As far as developing my artistic style, (as you can see from my full catalogue of works) I use many abstract styles. I can't always duplicate certain aspects or stylistic elements. My work is more determined by what comes my way - what I feel and what I'm receiving. It is how I communicate. I've come to realize that some of my works are about things I'm not comfortable doing or wish I could do more easily - like having a party or going out on the town. It is kind of funny that's how I experience those things. Many of my works are also about nature. If you have been to a pristine, natural area you know the feeling I'm trying to capture.
