Contemporary art overlapped with Hollywood celebrity at the Oscars this weekend. For me, these were the highlights of the show: the concurrent\u00a0Banksy<\/a> buzz on Twitter, Justin Timberlake<\/a> saying, “I’m Banksy”, and host James Franco \u2013 an emerging artist in the fields of\u00a0digital media and performance art.<\/p>\n

Franco, an Oscar nominated actor, is currently studying Digital Media at the Rhode Island School of Design<\/a> and is also actively engaged in performance art, painting, video, and installation art. He has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles<\/a>, Clocktower Gallery, New York<\/a>, and Peres Projects, Berlin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Coinciding with the Oscars is Franco’s Gagosian Gallery<\/a> exhibit with well-known Hollywood director and painter Gus Van Sant<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to a Wall Street Journal blog<\/a>, “Franco’s previous foray into the avant-garde was in the film \u201cErased James Franco\u201d \u2013 a Warhol-esque deconstruction of James Franco\u2019s career in which he re-enacts past movie roles and parts originated by Julianne Moore and Rock Hudson. It was directed by his friend, the New York-based artist Carter<\/a>. The film premiered at the Museum of Modern Art.”<\/div>\n
