But the feline-inspired portrait went for much, much more.<\/p>\n<p>A mystery buyer paid $826,000 to take home what&#8217;s being called &#8220;the largest and most expensive cat painting ever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 409px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/product\/details\/43775\/Virtual-Cat\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/zatista-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/products\/15732_3qbi72v3dbhjdckiil863u0sj4_3pS22Y58EDYWn78d_1_390x520.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Virtual Cat by Dwayne Wolff $150<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Titled \u201cMy Wife\u2019s Lovers,\u201d the 19th-century artwork is 6 feet tall and 8.5 feet wide and features more than 40 cats\u00a0of various breeds and colors. Weighing in at 227 pounds, the painting is so cumbersome that Sotheby\u2019s had difficulties displaying it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The picture is so large and so heavy, we had to make a special wall to hang it,\u201d Polly Sartori, head of 19th-century European paintings, drawings and sculpture at Sotheby\u2019s, told <a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/market\/is-sothebys-selling-largest-cat-painting-350447\">artnet News<\/a>. \u201cWhen we originally put the painting up on a normal wall, it pulled the nails right out of the wall.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/product\/details\/47731\/Drops\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/zatista-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/products\/19306_567ce7q1j6ua55gvri078icik5_eP7zO81D58vdHwoy_1_390x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"332\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drops by Katrina Avotina $1,150<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The portrait was put on display in the center of the gallery for the Nov. 3 auction, and Sartori said that Sotheby\u2019s knew for months that the feline work of art would be a \u201ctotal winner.\u201d The auction house originally estimated that the painting would fetch between $200,000 and $300,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we had it just leaning up in our cataloging area &#8230; many of our staffers would take a photograph in front of it and post it on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnn.com\/earth-matters\/climate-weather\/stories\/wildlife-on-instagram-25-best-nature-photographers-to-follow\">Instagram<\/a> and we hadn&#8217;t even posted our press release yet,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/product\/details\/17288\/Window-With-Cat\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/zatista-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/products\/5394_77soidfba1mmr83d7uc2a8bnr3_Aa44qq0pXGDsEO0r_1_390x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"542\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Window With Cat by Joan Franklin $385<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 1891, San Francisco cat lover and philanthropist Kate Birdsall Johnson commissioned Austrian artist Carl Kahler to paint the portrait of her 42 beloved cats.<\/p>\n<p>Kahler observed the cherished felines for years, making sketches of them and noting their personality traits. It took him three years to complete the portrait, which features a green-eyed cat named Sultan \u2014 a cat Johnson bought in Paris for $3,000 \u2014 at its center.<\/p>\n<p>The purrfect painting got its name from Johnson\u2019s husband, who clearly had a sense of humor about his cat lady\u00a0of a wife.\u00a0Johnson was rumored to have had up to 350 cats at one time\u00a0\u2014 in fact, all of them had names and occupied their own floor in her Sonoma County mansion. The cats were also said to have their own servants.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/product\/details\/47872\/Very-Blue-Kitty-Kat\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/zatista-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/products\/19141_j9icdclrkcno69e4krdheaoc23_28z7r6feuf6OTBW0_1_390x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"506\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Very Blue Kitty Kat by Bea Roberts $153<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She died in 1893, just two years after the portrait was completed.
