O&#8217;Hara Fund<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sifting through the art news of the week, I stumbled across an article from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artfixdaily.com\/artwire\/release\/3114-dallas-art-museum-acquires-major-neoclassical-painting\">Artfixdaily <\/a>saying The Dallas Museum of Art announced its acquisition of <i>The Harp Lesson<\/i> by Jean Antoine Theodore Giroust. They described the painting Neoclassical. When I looked at the painting of three elegant women playing delicate music surrounded by vivid colors, I realized I didn&#8217;t know\u00a0the difference between Classical and Neoclassical. So, I went to the best\u00a0place I could think of for enlightenment: the Internet.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/product\/details\/16126\/After-Leonardo-Virgin-of-the-Rocks\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/zatista-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/products\/497_cqf3ak5p5jh6nf6gv77g6bc6o3_6Wz1r1u2XtbI4165_1_390x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">After Leonardo (Virgin of the Rocks) by Noe Badillo on Zatista.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The big book of everything you need to know, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/120317\/Classicism-and-Neoclassicism#ref23184\">Encyclopaedia Britannica<\/a>, says Classicism and Neoclassicism can be used interchangeably. Both terms describe\u00a0art based on the art of Greece and Rome in a period before the middle ages. \u201cClassicism refers either to the art produced in antiquity or to later art inspired by that of antiquity; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/408739\/Neoclassicism\">Neoclassicism<\/a> always refers to the art produced later but inspired by antiquity.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/product\/details\/43887\/Ballerina-in-brown\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/zatista-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/products\/4702_1qdh8ked3evse6umil39tq7rh1_91vZK3Q9025Szdy0_1_390x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"563\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ballerina in brown by Pavel Kasparek on Zatista.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artcyclopedia.com\/history\/neoclassicism.html\">Artcyclopedia<\/a>, Neoclassicism\u00a0is a mid-18th century to early-19th century genre of art. It\u2019s an unemotional genre characterized as a revival of interest in classical art during the American and French revolutions. Around that time, Romanticism also emerged as a direct reaction to Neoclassicism. Artists were frequently influenced by both styles. The two styles were like ham and cheese; not the same, but darn good together.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/product\/details\/43396\/Artists-Model\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zatista-images.s3.amazonaws.com\/products\/17016_k4qgq2nce4cfvbpah1bsob4de6_Q6i1OkqUbqq94TXm_1_390x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"532\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Artists&#8217; Model by Judith Harvey on Zatista.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Neoclassical painters often painted somber colors, with clear, strong lines. According to Khan Academy, this was because Neoclassicism was a castoff of the Age of Enlightenment. \u201cScientific inquiry attracted more attention. Therefore, Neoclassicism continued the connection to the Classical tradition because it signified moderation and rational thinking but in a new and more politically-charged spirit (\u201cneo\u201d means \u201cnew,\u201d or in the case of art, an existing style reiterated with a new twist.)\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, Classic and Neoclassic are not completely separate. In fashion terms it&#8217;s women bringing back leggings and high-waisted jeans. In television, it&#8217;s How I Met Your Mother reinventing Friends. In literature, it\u2019s<i> Pride and Prejudice and Zombies<\/i> (admittedly a weak comparison). This art form pays homage to the classical era and its inspirations while still adding new elements and derivations.
