Avedon, who was a contemporary of James Baldwin, eventually found his own fame as a photographer for Vogue Magazine and later drew praise from post-structuralist philosopher Roland Barthes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newamericanpaintings.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/28\/controlled-chaos-john-cage-at-crown-point-press\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newamericanpaintings.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/dereau_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption>John Cage | D\u00e9reau, 1982, #22 from a series of 38 related color etchings with aquatint, engraving, photoetching and drypoint, Paper Size: 18-1\/2 x 24-1\/2\u2033<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Cage\">John Cage<\/a>, Pomona College<br>\nCage studied a variety of subjects over two years at Pomona but failed to see the value in completing his education and left for Europe where he would begin to experiment in music composition. His &#8220;silent&#8221; musical composition 4&#8217;33&#8221; (In Proportional Notation) (1952\/53) should not be confused, numerically speaking, with his 1982 etching D\u00e9reau No. 33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jasper_Johns\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/d\/d7\/Three_Flags.jpg\/220px-Three_Flags.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Three Flags by Jasper Johns, 1958 Whitney Museum of American Art<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jasper_Johns\">Jasper Johns<\/a>, The University of South Carolina<br>\nJohns, whose work is often cited as an influence for many of the significant movements in art after 1965, was actually encouraged by his professors at the University of South Carolina to move to New York and begin his career, which he eventually did without his degree in 1948 after three semesters at the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imaginepowerarising.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.a-i-u.net\/images\/arising.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Arising, an ongoing exhibit by Yoko Ono<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>4. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yoko_Ono\">Yoko Ono<\/a>, Sarah Lawrence<br>\nShortly after dropping out of Sarah Lawrence College, Yoko Ono became heavily involved in the New York City downtown art scene as a key member of the performance group Fluxus. She has also won two Grammys, one as an artist and producer in 1981 and one as a video producer in 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haring.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.haring.com\/!\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/radiant_baby_90.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption>(Radiant Baby from Icons series), 1990 by Keith Haring<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>5. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haring.com\/!\/#.VG\">Keith Haring<\/a>, Ivy School of Professional Art and School of Visual Arts<br>\nKnown for his street murals and subway graffiti as much as his social contacts, Haring left school in Pittsburgh after realizing that he had no interest in making commercial art and moved to New York, where he briefly enrolled in SVA before dropping out to run the streets with the likes of Madonna, who dropped out of the University of Michigan, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, who never finished high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Hughes_(critic)\">Robert Hughes<\/a>, The University of Sydney<br>\nAs an undergraduate, Hughes was a key figure in the \u2018Sydney PUSH&#8217; movement\u2013a group that included Clive James and was made up predominately of Hughes&#8217; classmates at the University of Sydney. But he left the university without graduating and went on to become one of the greatest art critics of the 20th century. Hughes \u201cnever wrote a bad sentence&#8221; and was the author of several influential books. He considered himself a painter first and was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1996, despite his lack of scholastic credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harmony_Korine\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/a\/ac\/HarmonyKorine07TIFF.jpg\/220px-HarmonyKorine07TIFF.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Harmony Korine at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>7. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harmony_Korine\">Harmony Korine,<\/a> New York University<br>\nThe producer and screenwriter, whose paintings were on view this spring at the Park Avenue Gagosian Gallery, attended NYU for one semester before dropping out to focus on skateboarding. Korine&#8217;s fortune soon changed after director Larry Clark discovered him skateboarding in Washington Square Park and, taken by the young Korine, challenged him to write a script for what would eventually become Kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfweekly.com\/exhibitionist\/2014\/11\/19\/john-waters-on-christmas-hit-men-and-who-vomits-on-children\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sfweekly.com\/imager\/john-waters-on-christmas-hit-men-and-who\/b\/original\/3259532\/a240\/jw.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption>John Waters photo by Greg Gorman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>8. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamlandnews.com\">John Waters<\/a>, New York University<br>\nBefore becoming one of the most innovate filmmakers of his (or any) generation, Waters, who is currently represented by Marianne Boesky, attended NYU&#8217;s Tisch School of the Arts \u201cfor about five minutes&#8221; in the fall of 1964. For his part, he claims he has no ill will toward the university, saying, \u201cIt wasn&#8217;t NYU&#8217;s fault, I don&#8217;t blame them. I was out of my mind. I never went to class. Back then I was on LSD, Speed, and diet pills. I was up a lot.
