The exhibit also celebrates\u00a0the the release of the lavishly illustrated book\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyhistorystore.com\/shop\/audubon\/audubons-aviary-original-watercolors-birds-america-book-hardcover\">Audubon\u2019s Aviary: The Original Watercolors for \u201cThe Birds of America\u201d<\/a><\/em>\u2015published by the New-York Historical Society and Skira\/Rizzoli and winner of a 2013 New York Book Show Award.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyhistory.org\/exhibitions\/audubons-aviary\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"John James Audubon (1785-1851), Great Egret (Ardea alba), 1821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nyhistory.org\/sites\/default\/files\/imagecache\/exhibition_teaser_image\/1863_18_030_GreatEgret_OE_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">John James Audubon (1785-1851), Great Egret (Ardea alba), 1821<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The collection includes 435\u00a0watercolors\u00a0engraved for Audubon&#8217;s monumental &#8220;The Birds of America.&#8221; The intricately detailed, life-size renderings are the naturalist&#8217;s greatest work.\u00a0An original edition of Audubon&#8217;s book, known as the double elephant folio, is also being shown. Its plates will be turned weekly. \u00a0The exhibit will showcase every masterpiece from its unparalleled collection of John James Audubon\u2019s preparatory watercolor models for <em>The Birds of America<\/em>\u00a0(1827\u201338).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyhistory.org\/node\/564\/gallery\/30349\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Carolina Parakeet (Conuropsis carolinensis), Study for Havell pl. no. 26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nyhistory.org\/sites\/default\/files\/imagecache\/collections_full_width615\/emuseum\/14164.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carolina Parakeet (Conuropsis carolinensis), Study for Havell pl. no. 26<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The 3 1\/2-foot-tall volume features all the avian species known to Audubon in early 19th-century North America. He sold the engraved plates in a subscription series.\u00a0The museum purchased all the watercolors, except one, from the artist&#8217;s widow in 1863.
