The phrase is an allusion that can be used to refer to any other animal or human who behaves in the excitable and unpredictable manner of a &#8216;March hare&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13009\" style=\"width: 408px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/March_Hare\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13009\" class=\" wp-image-13009 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/March-hare-295x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13009\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">March Hare by John Tenniel on Wikipedia.org<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In his 1865 novel <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alice%27s_Adventures_in_Wonderland\">Alice\u2019s Adventures in Wonderland<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Lewis Carroll\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_Carroll\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Lewis Carroll<\/a> created a memorable character from this old proverb in the form of the March Hare, one of the whimsical guests at the Tea Party, for whom John Tenniel\u2019s illustration remains most people\u2019s preferred or most recognizable realization.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13010\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/March_Hare\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13010\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13010\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/March-hare-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"327\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The March Hare as he appears in the 1951 film Alice in Wonderland<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Long after its appearance in a beloved literary classic, and even further removed from its proverbial origins, The March Hare appears in film numerous times, most notably in animated form in the Disney classic and nearly 60 years later as <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"March Hare\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/March_Hare\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Thackery Earwicket<\/a> in another Disney film created by <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tim Burton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tim_Burton\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Burton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13011\" style=\"width: 408px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/March_Hare\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13011\" class=\" wp-image-13011 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/March_hare-Burton.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thackery Earwicket as he appears in the 2010 film<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/character\/ch0012245\/\">imdb\u00a0lists 39 appearances<\/a> of this character from 1931 to 2011. From the very first sighting of the antics of hares in spring, it seems we have a fascination for excitable, unpredictable, even nonsensical behavior, even if it turns out on closer inspection to make its own kind of perfect sense.
