I&#8217;m into investigating what motivates people to create, and artists who work within the context of impermanence are particularly interesting to me.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11187\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/artnot\/12_img_2923\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11187\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11187\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11187\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/12_IMG_2923-400x254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11187\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: jimdenevan.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Most of us create to literally create \u2013 something, a painting, a sculpture, a drawing, a photo. We can hold these things in our hands, look at them, share them, save them and come back and revisit the ideas that informed their creation later on.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does it mean when someone makes something that&#8217;s not meant to stick around? Like those messages in the Mission: Impossible movies \u2013 things that self-destruct in their own way. For some artists, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldsworthy.cc.gla.ac.uk\/\">Andy Goldsworthy<\/a> or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdenevan.com\/jim.htm\">\u00a0Jim Denevan<\/a>, destruction is a part of the process of making art.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11185\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/artnot\/06_img_3414\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11185\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11185\" class=\" wp-image-11185 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/06_IMG_3414-379x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: jimdenevan.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jim is renown for etching huge designs on beaches with sticks, rakes and shovels. He&#8217;s not alone in embracing the medium, but he is my favorite artist within the niche. The best part of his work is that it&#8217;s never meant to stay around too long. His pieces are like sparks, bright flashes of illumination and beauty that disappear quickly in the grand scheme of things. His choice to work within the tidal plane informs his entire creative process \u2013 and he&#8217;s got to work quickly, because the tide is always coming back in.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11186\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/artnot\/10_b1344-denevan-raw6\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11186\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11186\" class=\" wp-image-11186  \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/10_B1344-Denevan-raw6-400x163.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11186\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: jimdenevan.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So what do you think? Does including destruction or disappearance in artwork make it more interesting or beautiful?
